One of the great bands to come out of 1980’s Portland, Oregon, NU SHOOZ just celebrated the 30 year anniversary of the release of their signature hit, ‘I Can’t Wait.’ Now they’ve just released their first album of new material since 1988, a nine-song set called ‘Bagtown.’
‘Bagtown’ turns back the clock to an earlier era of funk, the Mid-70’s sounds of Philly Soul, Steely Dan, and jazzy vocal groups like Manhattan Transfer. The result is a swinging set of technicolor tunes aimed straight at the dance floor. “We needed some new songs to play. This time the focus was on fun.”
The band re-formed three years ago; the members are all alumni from previous incarnations of the group’s 37 year history. Singer Valerie Day says, “We wanted people we knew could get Nu Shooz right,” and get it right they do.
The ‘Shooz’ have re-emerged lately on the Super Freestyle Explosion Tour criss-crossing the United States, and most recently on a high profile spot for Target. That exposure brought out fans old and nu.
This will be their final Portland OR appearance of the 2016 season. The band will be playing all their hits plus a long list of tunes from their albums ‘Poolside,’ ‘Told U So,’ ‘Kung Pao Kitchen,’ and of course, ‘Bagtown.
