SoulPatch Music Productions celebrates its founder Vahagn Khachaturian's 40th birthday and his affection for pianos, by presenting internationally renowned pianists George Colligan and Randy Porter in an evening of solo and duo performances at Michelle's Pianos on Saturday, September 15th at 6pm.
Pianist George Colligan is getting further away from being jazz's best kept secret and closer to the world-wide recognition he deserves as one of the most original and compelling jazz artists of his generation. The gifted multi-instrumentalist was raised in Columbia, Maryland, and attended the Peabody Institute majoring in classical trumpet later switching to piano. An eclectic and wide-ranging musician, Colligan incorporates everything from show tunes to funk, from bebop to free improvisation and to modern classical music. His performances are celebrated for displaying dazzling technique, as well as mature restraint. Because of these and many other exceptional qualities he was named the winner of the industry leader Downbeat Magazine’s Critics’ Poll in 2015.
Randy Porter's 2017 GRAMMY nomination reaffirmed what the Portland audience has known for decades—that Steinway artist Randy Porter is one of the most sophisticated and superb practitioners of this music. Raised in San Diego, Porter studied at the New England Conservatory where his teachers included colossal figures like Jaki Byard and Fred Hersch. Porter has had a long association with the legendary saxophonist Charles McPherson—touring the world as part of his quartet, re-creating the music from the classic recording Charlie Parker with Strings, and performing McPherson’s Sweet Synergy Suite with the San Diego Ballet.
