A. Claiming Voice: Taking Action in the World through Student Publication
Erick Gordon (Student Press Initiative, Columbia University) Ballroom
Student Press Initiative (SPI) engages students in community action through writing and publishing books for their schools, communities, and the world. Workshop participants will explore how writing for publication helps build critical literacy skills, heightens students’ investment in learning, and prepares young authors to ‘write the world’ through intensive community research projects. Participants will be introduced to a rationale and framework for how to design and implement curriculum-based publications.
B. Publishing for Teachers: Books, Blogs and Beyond
Kay Tracy and Stephanie Kroll (Ooligan Press)
Markham Room Join staff from Portland State University’s Ooligan Press as they take the publishing process out of the press and into the classroom.
C. How to Engage (and Heal) Distressed Youth through Personal Poetry
Richard Gold (Pongo Teen Writing Project, Seattle) Morrison Room
Growing up is hard. And many young people are exposed to the ugliness of the world too early. This workshop shares specific techniques for teaching writing to youth who have been exposed to abuse, neglect, addiction, and violence.
D. Writing Our Lives to Develop Cross-Cultural Understanding
Beth Essex, Elizabeth Schlessman (Beaverton School District) Sellwood Room
