While Dionne was performing background with the Drifters’ in 1962, Warwick’s voice and star presence were noticed by the song’s composer, Burt Bacharach. Dionne was signed to Bacharach’s and David’s production company, which in turn was signed to Scepter Records. In November of 1962, Scepter Records released her first solo single, “Don’t Make Me Over.” It reached #21 on the top 40. Warrick’s name was misspelled on the label, and then she started using her new spelling, “Warwick”, both professionally and personally. Her next hit single was “Anyone Who Had a Heart, followed by “Walk on By” in 1964 that solidified her career.

Warwick weathered the British Invasion better than most American artists with hits of “Walk on By,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.” Warwick was named the bestselling female vocalist in 1964.  In 1965, she recorded “Thunderball” which became the theme song for the James Bond film Thunderball.

The 1970’s were very successful with such hits as “Message to Michael”, “Trains and Boats and Planes” and “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself.” She then had another movie hit with “Alfie” and followed that with another movie hit from Valley of Dolls with “Say a Little Prayer.”

In 1969, Dionne was hired by CBS to air her first television special, entitled The Dionne Warwick Chevy Special. In 1970, Warwick formed her own label, Sonday Records, which she was president.  The hits kept coming with “The Look of Love” and What the World Needs Now” and “Come Together.” She closed her own record label company and signed with Warner Bros. Records.

In the mid 70’s, the mega hits “Then Came You”, and “Love at First Sight.” In 1979, she signed with Arista Records with her million seller “I’ll Never Love This Way Again.” That song was produced by Barry Manilow. She was guided by the label’s founder Clive Davis. In 1980, she became the first female in history to win two Grammys in the same year in two different categories. She won Best Pop Vocal for “I’ll Never Love this Way Again” and “Deja Vu” for Best R&B Vocal.

Warwick hosted a two-hour TV special called Solid Gold, which she hosted from 1980-86. During the early 80’s she recorded duets with Johnny Mathis and Barry Gibb. The duet with Barry Gibb entitled “Heartbreaker” returned her to No. 1 Adult Contemporary and No. 2 in the UK and Australia. She then collaborated with Luther Vandross with “How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye”. In 1985, Warwick went back to work with Bacharach and they created the mega hit together, “That’s What Friends are For.” That song was used for a benefit for AIDS research alongside Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.  

Warwick continued recording and creating hits throughout the 1990’s with hits “Friends Can be Lovers” and “Where My Lips Have Been.” In 2005, Warwick was honored by Oprah Winfrey at her Legends Ball. In 2006, she signed with Concord Records after a fifteen tenure with Arista. She returned to her gospel roots and released several albums with success and began recording songs from Sammy Cahn and Jack Wolf. She recorded her hit “Only Trust Your Heart” in 2011.  

Warwick headlined the World Hunger Day concert in 2012 and worked on many more world causes with dozens of mega stars. She continues to record and in 2023 released a duet with Dolly Parton.  

Dionne is one of the Kennedy Center Honorees in 2023 recognizing her decades of contributions to music and humanity.  Dionne has won six Grammy Awards and nominated a total of fifteen times.  She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and has been honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Songwriters Hall of Fame,, Living Legend Award, just to name a few. She is the one of the top five most recorded female artists of all time. She is also the aunt of legendary singer Whitney Houston.
